Just before Christmas- literally Christmas Eve- I finished our formal dining area, and completed most of our informal dining area and repainted the living room. PHEW! Yes, it was insane. But luckily I got by with a little help from my friends. (A special thanks to Stephanie Keller and Jo Crawford- you girls are living angels!) Originally, I thought I would go with an orange and turquoise scheme. And while I still love these colors, I worried that I would tire of them too easily. My husband actually said that he would like to paint the formal dining room Navy?! Well it threw me for a loop since I had already purchased and created the slip covers, one of the fabrics featured black in its scheme. I know all the fashion rags say how chic navy and black are together, but we don't really live the "chic" lifestyle. Nor was anything I previously envisioned very glam, but after some gentle nudging from another couple of girls friends (thanks Andrea Wojiack and Jill Chambers) I decided to just go for it. After all, this was a room redone on a seriously tight and small budget, if I ended up hating the black on the chairs or the paint, it wasn't going to break the bank to fix it.

Redone Formal Dining Room: Projects include: Painting (Sherman Williams Naval Eggshell), Parsons Chairs (Six Slipcovers, 4 in Belgium Linen, 2 Captains in Plaid Kravet Silk- plz ignore the fact they still need to be hemmed!), China Cabinet (Refinished in Antique White Valspar, with a Dark Brown/Black Glaze and distressing) 2 vases with succulents ( sand from Hobby Lobby, plants from Home Depot)

Two garage sale scones flank the redone china cabinet. ($4) I used two different patterns to create my own pattern for the parson's chairs. I found the chairs- all 6 for $60 on Craig's List. They are very 1992. I used the directions for making your own patterns from Bibbidi and Etsy

Crate and Barrel Vases (wedding gift). I took two succulents from Home Depot, placed them inside the vase and with a funnel I carefully added the fine play sand from Hobby Lobby.

Our table is a door off of an old mission. I filled the recesses with vintage liquor bottles. We topped the table with custom cut plate glass. Our table is always a conversation starter.

I purchased simple cream pinch pleated drapes for the space. They are made by JC Penny's and I found them along with another set on Ebay for ($40 including shipping.) The hardware is off the shelf from Lowe's. It is a walnut finish which compliments our table.

This baby took me months- literally- to finish. Mainly cause I would only work a little here and there. I still need to adjust one of the doors since after I painted it sticks shut, but this project is seriously close to being done. I left the hardware as is. I actually like the patina of the brass- it even has some greening which I think makes it look older and not as 1970's.

I used a Cole and Sons faux grass cloth wallpaper (Ebay) to cover the back of the china cabinet. It is super hard to see here, but it looks very nice.

New Valance in Informal Dining Room

Well I was right- a little sewing vindication. The window in the dining room was longer- hence more fabric- hence more annoying- but in the end, knowing and having done the pattern previously for Maggie's room was a huge help! I used a mid- weight fabric on this valance and if I had to do it over again, I would have passed on the interlining. It made it very hard to sew the layers together- and button holes were a major pain. In the long run- I have a great valance. I had to order more fabric since I ended up measuring wrong so the pleated curtains are still in the wings.

Halloween Display

Most people in blog land probably did this post about a month ago, and while I started planning this in September, I just haven't had the time to do the post until now. I was shopping at Goodwill one day and I ran across these great little glass containers. I have been somewhere in blogland when I remembered a post a person had done for a Halloween display with small jars of assorted potions. Suddenly these old spice jars seemed a lot more valuable. Then I thought about creating a tiered "cake" plate for the potions. As I wandered the home section of Goodwill, a theme started brewing..... What if I created a table based on one of the best villians of all time- the wicked step mother from Snow White. Although I never fully finished the theme this year- it allows me to work on it again next year. For this year, I found some fun owl book ends- one with missing marble eyes- which in a way may even be scarier, the great jars, tiered dishes with candle holders, dollar store spiders, fake blood, spider webs and black mesh, the glass jars- an assortment from goodwill and from Hobby Lobby. Next year I plan on making spell books from used books like this shown here, and a mirror with a vinyl statement of "mirror mirror on the wall" and a fill a basket with apples. This gives me a little time and money that I did not have this fall to complete a spooktacular display.

Printable Jar Lables: Free Downloads here and here. The kids had a blast coming up with fun things to put in the jars- our actual gross out jar contains dust bunnies of our dog's hair- seriously gross!
Goodwill- Use your imagination when you scan through the house wares dept. They usually have a myriad of cheap and fun options.
Oriental Trading Company- They have a fun selection of spooky candy. I selected gumball eyeballs, gummy tarantulas, and gummy eyeballs, and wax fangs.
Dollar Store: Tons of great cheap selections for decorating. Your budget can be small and you can still get some great stuff for your display.

Wonder Woman Themed Birthday Party

My dd just turned four last Saturday. For her party she decided that she wanted a wonder woman theme. I reluctantly agreed. You see, for the last two years ( I rotate the kids parties every other year) it has been superhero related, First it was Batman, then Spiderman, and again with the superhero- Wonder Woman. Actually it ended up being a positive- at least we were doing a female superhero. And as it turns out, I got really into it. We had three main activities- Create your Secret idenity- kids decorated masks and capes, Villian Round up with the Golden Lasso of Truth, and lastly Testing Physical Strength- the obstacle course.

Living Locurto - She has amazing free downloads. I used the mask templates, the invite and the printable superhero stickers.
Petite Bouh- Other great printables, I bought a package of everything for $40.
Georgia Leigh- Superhero Cape template- I then cut mine from felt, along with masks- no sew option. I used three different sizes for my capes.
Super hero treat bags- I forgot to picture this but each kid got a superhero bag to take their capes, masks, and candies home in. Oriental Trading Company has some great ones! Super fun we are actually using the bags for Halloween- I bet you can't guess what my kids are going as! I also purchased some great lollipops, and candy dots for take home goodies.
Dollar Store-The colors for this party were easy, red, yellow, and blue. I found plastic table cloths, paper products, good plastic containers and assorted glass display vases- all for about a buck.
Jo-Ann- I found the felt, felt glue, elastic string, velcro, felted stickers, puff paint, etc. here.
Red and White Straws- I actually scored these while on a trip the the Vintage Market in Phoenix hosted by the Junk n the Trunk trio. (super fun) But if you aren't at the Vintage Market you can buy them here Domestic Charm.

Games- Various ideas all over the internet. I actually liked another that I did not have time for, the game suggested that you blow up balloons- filled with a small prize like a fake tattoo, and then make mean faces on the ballons. Have kids take out the villians to save metropolis by stomping on balloons.
I basically did a little googling and found great ideas that others had done and combined them with my own. It is amazing how talented people are. Also just an FYI- do not wait until the last minute if you are doing this on your own. I did a little bit a day for about a month prior to the party- not everyday, but I kept working at it until I was finished.

Entry Table Makeover

A while back I scored a nice vintage 1980s entry table on Craig's List from a really nice girl who happens to live in my neighborhood. Anyhow- the price was right at $30. I purchased a paint sprayer a while back that was rec'd by Anne Marie of Twice Lovely (see blogs I follow below to check her out). It was the right price at $15. The hubs already has an air compressor, so that saved me some serious cash! I also purchased 4 legs from Lowe's for the table since it was only 25 inches tall, making the table a nice 32 inches high. I liked that the table had a lower shelf and main shelf. It had these grey glass inserts on the top, which I was not a huge fan of, but i figured I could use some glass etching technique to bring the table up to speed. I have been slightly obsessed with Greek Fretwork, so I decided on that for my stenciling (maybe not the best choice in hindsight- more on that later.) I think the etching paint was $20, but you can buy a smaller contained for less, I just thought I might like to use it again. I also purchased a "Man Cave" grey paint from Lowes in a semi gloss latex. Micheal's had the Martha Stewart for plaid paints, I bought a light grey, some brushes for painting lines (fabulous btw) and some painters tape from her line as well. I had coupons for the Micheal's gear, so that helped out a bit.
Here are the steps I used to get the final look:
1.) Sand down the peice
2.) Remove old feet, replace with new
3.) Prep for spraying the piece, hang plastic, filter paint for sprayer, test spray paint on board to check that nozzle/pressure/ technique are correct.
4.) Spray piece with paint, initially we did not water it down, but we ended up watering the paint down for the last coat. We think that the paint might not have been properly mixed since it was really chunky?
5.) After allowing paint to dry for 24 hours, tape the stencil design. Then paint the stencil design. Remove tape and touch up. I had to touch up the entire piece since when I removed the tape the edges were not very crisp. This is where Martha's brush set rocked! The detailing brushes were great for touching up the straight lines.
6.) Polycrylic the piece with as many coats as you desire- I did two in a satin finish.
7.) For the glass inserts. I cleaned the glass, taped down my design and then I followed the manufactures instructions on the etching solution. This included leaving the etching solution on for 5 minutes then washing off. I repeated this process a second time. In hindsight, I would not have done this. I did not remove all the tape and start stenciling again so it wasn't super clean and you can see where the etching solution actually was still on the glass and etched portions I did not have in my initial design. I also might have picked an easier stencil to try first. Something very linear and symetrical is not very forgiving for a novice.

Finally Feeling Fall

Well I have been super busy! Last week I completed several projects. I finished up repairs that had be lying in wait on the sewing table for months (yes, months!) and I actually cleaned up my crafting space a little. I finished sanding down the entry table, and starting prepping for Maggie's b-day party. I was super busy- not blogging! Anyhow, one of the best things I did, that takes about an entire day, was to pressure can some beef and potato soup. I know we will be going through it this fall, especially school nites when we have soccer practice or kung fu. It takes about a day, but pays off with ready to go to dinners. It may not be as cheap as store bought soup, but it is about ten times better tasting and WAAAAY healthier- nothing you couldn't read on a label if my soup had 'em! Here's how I did it:
1.) Prep jars- I sterilize mine in the dishwasher. Check to make sure all lids of jars are perfect, no cracks or chips. They will not seal otherwise. Wash lids, and seals. Place all jars, lids, seals, funnel, and ladle on a large cloth on counter. This helps protect, and clean up after.
2.) Prep Food- Ingredients may vary slightly, but make sure that what you are canning is safe to can- some ingredients do not can! Read your instructions on Pressure Canner to make sure what you plan to put in your soup will not turn FUNKY!! I used 1 onion, 5 stalks celery, a bag of carrots, about 16 small white potato, 2 28 oz cans of green beans, 4 cloves garlic, about 1 Tbs, fresh rosemary and thyme, 4 bay leaves, 2 Tbs. canning salt, and 2 tsp. pepper. I purchased about 4 lbs of chuck roast (cheapest cut I could find) and cubed it. I cleaned, minced, slices, peeled and chopped before I start cooking.
3.) Prep stock pots with EVOO, just about a TBS. Pre-heat at med-high.
4.) Brown Beef, Add Veg, Herb, Seasoning. Cover with water and simmer on med-high for about and hour.
5.) Prep Pressure Cooker, Check to make sure rubber seal is in place, add 2 quarts of water for every six quarts you process. Adjust pressure to 10 lbs.
6.) Using wide mouth funnel and ladle, start putting soup in jars. Wipe lid of jar clean, add seal and ring. Place jar in pressure cooker, leaving space between each jar so glass does not touch. When 6 quarts are finished, close pressure cooker following manufacture instructions. Wait for 5 minutes or so until steam starts pouring from closed lid. Add pressure ring adjusted to 10 lbs pressure. Wait until ring starts to gently rock. Start timing now. For six quarts, process for 75 minutes. Make sure to adjust heat so that the ring is just gently rocking. If if starts to rock fast, then turn down the heat some until it is again gently rocking. When time is finished turn off stove top and wait. Do not re open pressure cooker until all pressure has escaped.
7.) Clean off outside of jars, they may have some spilled over soup from the pressure cooking process.

Weekend Warriors

The past Saturday, the hubs and I knocked out our eat in kitchen area. He kinda wanted to kill me because he thinks this color (as he would say "non-color") was the same as it was when we moved in. However, it was so different I painted the ceiling over as well. I know this is just plumb crazy and a little presumptious, but I asked for my Christmas present while we were working. I know you are just dying with anticipation to here what I am getting! CROWN MOLDING!! I think it will really help to finish off the room.
My next project for this space is my curtains. I am doing a valance similar to my daughters for behind the red table I have pictured, and then pinch pleats for the sliding glass door. I am hoping our energy saving since they will insulate this space well in winter and summer ( I am blackout lining and interling them) will justify the cost of the fabric. Literally, only time will tell.
I also did a little craft over the weekend. I used some old tin cans and some scrapbook paper I had along with the following printables for the green faux bois, and the black and white chevron printed paper. Such a simple project. I used a double sided tape along the top and bottom of the cans, cut the paper to size and wrapped the cans. Easy peasy. Then I used some fun ric rac trim I had on hand and the double sided tape again to trim out the cans. Super simple and FREE!

Maggie's "New" Nite Stand

As much as I haven't been amazing about bloggin, I actually have been getting things done. I am not sure how all those bloggers do it, manage a house, do just about everything themselves, and then blog about it? I really am pretty shaky at managing the house and bloggin- let's just say- not so much! Anyhow, I just finished up my daughter's new night stand. I actually purchased this a while back and at first I wanted to convert this to a new vanity in my bathroom. Since I purchased this on Craig's List I did not really look very closely at the peice- to my credit, the room was really cramped and dark. What I should have done is passed on the peice. It is a veneered peice of furniture- again with the darn veneers! Well I think I am starting to learn my lesson with this. I should have taken a pic before but I just got to work instead. I am kinda mad at myself for buying it. However, I did have a great spot for it, and it is providing much needed additional storage- albeit for my maternity clothes. It turned out pretty well and is better than the cheap old circular table you can buy at Wally World that I had covered with a table skirt.

My favorite part of the table is a vintage linen I scored at Goodwill. It was hand embroidered and is super cute. My Goodwill trip was a total score. I found this great set of Irish linen napkins with an amazing tone on tone art nouveau style. LOVE THEM! And at 49 cents a peice- they were a seriously good deal. Immaculate condition- I am sure they were someones "good" linens and were used like once a year!

Girls Nite In Craft Nite

Had a blast last night and I actually completed another project from my 'to-craft' list! WAHOO. Stephanie, Shaunti and I made these great kitchen canisters. Stephanie had the Cricut machine and we used it to cut out vinyl black lettering in the "Opposites Attract" font. Shaunti and Stephanie used the "upright" lettering- which was great because then you can avoid the forever long tails in the normal font setting. We all created different canister based on our needs and they turned out great! It was a little more time consuming than we had read about the Scissors and Spatulas tutorial, but it really didn't matter cause we had time to talk while we worked. It was a great update to my counter top and now I can access my more used baking supplies with ease. Plus I had the opportunity to use the Cricut for the first time and it was really fun- I can see why everyone likes them.

Can't wait for tomarrow nite. I am hosting a girls nite in craft nite. Stephanie is bringing the Cricut and we are going to try our hand at making these great kitchen canisters. I ordered a font cartridge from Amazon since I had a gift certificate for my b-day I needed to use. It was either that or some great wax for hair removal that a girlfriend suggested- what sounds like more fun to you- right? So we will have a couple of bottles of wine, and a couple friends and see if we can't just do this ourselves. I will post some party pics tomarrow! I actually do baking with both whole wheat (I actually mill my own) and all purpose, so having a space for both where they are easy to use will be perfect. Everything else is icing on the cake- so to speak. Can't wait to knock another thing off my to-make list.
In other fabulous news, I just need to staple the curtain to the valence and mount it to the wall- ALL SEWING IS DONE! Post that pic tomarrow too! Yippie!

Well I finished the button holes for the sash, next step is pleating. I am really hoping to finish this weekend! My oldest kiddos are going camping with Dad, so it is me, the baby, sewing machine and all my fabulous projects! I took a little intermission last weekend (more adhd!) and did some canning. I made 16 pints of pasta sauce which will really come in handy for a quick weekday meal now that school is starting. Here is some pics of the process- took me Saturday and a good portion of Sunday to finish. But is is super healthy and I know I will be feeding my family well!

Serious Case of Creative ADHD!

Can I blame my ADHD on being creative, or is it really just a lack of focus? It really doesn't matter, I just have to many stinkin' ideas and too little time. So my post today will be short and sweet so that I can FOCUS on finishing Maggie's (DD) gorgeous valence. I decided to take a quick detour from the dining room, so that I could practice this new pattern from Pate- Meadows. It is the Dana valence. I officially started cutting this Monday and it is Friday and I am finally getting ready to start sewing. Whatever happened to nap time?? Anyhow, I am using the same pattern in the dining room, so I though I would 'practice' in Maggie's room first. Hopefully, I will have this finished early next week. (I have had the fabric for her curtains since before she was born and she is now three- Ridiculous, I know!) Here is an example of the finished pattern from their web site. They have tons of fun patterns and so far- the pattern has been easy! Hopefully finishing will be just as easy!

Fixing Veneers on an Existing Piece of Furniture

Well I finished our table for the informal dining room and we have been enjoying the new space for about a week now. Prior to finishing I had to do some quick veneer fixes to the top of the table. When I purchased this table from Goodwill, I don't think I realized the top of the table was actually a closet door from the hardware store. In the process of sanding the table, I realized just what bad shape the table was in. I had to fill and patch many places on the top of the surface with Minwax Stain/Paintable Woodfiller. After patching and sanding a couple of times to get a smooth finish, I then noticed I had about four places on the bottom of the table top where the veneer had pulled away. Luckily, we had all the supplies I needed. If you want to fix a veneer, here is what you will need: 1.) Elmer's exterior waterproof wood glue 2.) A small putty knife 3) Clamps (clamp number will depend on the length of the veneer that is detached- I had to use four). 4.) Optional- Small plate or bowl.

After I had finished sanding the piece down, I used my finger to pull down on the loose veneer. I then put my putty knife into the bowl I had filled with wood glue. I used the putty knife to spread the glue all throughout the veneer portions that were open. I used a generous amount of wood glue. Then I set the veneer back down and used my clamps to really hold the piece back together. I then wiped off excess glue that squeezed out from the veneer and door interior. I was patient and waited 12 hours before removing my clamps. I repeated this process about four times since I had a lot of veneer peels. This was a great lesson for me in really paying attention to what I purchase. It was more work than I really should have spent on such a (junky) piece of furniture.

This weekend marks the end of my bow making for the masses era. Yes I will still do custom orders, but I am done with the shows, and by fall, I plan on being done with Etsy. If you want to stock up, this weekend is for you. Downtown, on the square I will man my booth. The show is Saturday and Sunday from 9-5. Hope to see you there.

Gearing up for Girls Weekend and a Fabric Shopping Trip!

I am headed down to the Valley this weekend to stay at the Camelback Inn! It is going to be so much fun. Huge group of ladies, with a suite (our own pool!) and spa-AHHHHHH! Yippie!! I have been busy working on my informal dining room table. The refinishing is now in it's prime and paint stages. I have sealed off the garage, masked off an entire wall with plastic sheeting and covered the floor in a canvas drop cloth. One good coat of primer is finished and I will go back tomarrow with another additional coat. From there is is touch and go. I had to do some serious veneer work on the top of the table. Sort of felt like I was putting whipped cream on you know what. I am really gonna have to pay better attention to what I am buying! I am currently watching two fabulous sets of curtains complete with hardware. This would leave my palette pretty open at this point- not super sure where I want to go. I have been having a bit of a love affair with grey....

On to brighter rooms- Last week I found fabulous curtains (brand new dupioni in cream) on Ebay for the formal dining room. Planning on embellishing these with some great trims and potentially adding a valance and or sheers to create multiple layers. These two room redos will get some extra special attention this weekend when I am in the Valley. Before I check in on Friday, I am going to go to one of my fav fabric stores Fabric Depot. They have an amazing selection of home dec and upholstery fabrics. Since I have a couple room projects in progress, the fabrics may be what I need to make final decisions. Second Inspiration!

Since I usually have multiple projects and a bajillion ideas going at once, I finally had some inspiration for my informal dining room. I was finishing sanding my table, thinking about wood filler, and I realized that the top was probably not going to look great stained. Then, I had a thought! (yes, it is amazing it that the noggin still sometimes works) Since I was going to be staining it black- why not paint it black? Then I thought, to myself "Self, you know what is even more fun than black- CANDY APPLE RED!" Why the heck not. I have spent a whopping $100 on the table, if I get bored of the red in a couple year- I can just find a new table, and new project, hence new color. No huge investment here! So now I am even excited about the informal dining room. I also decided to create a little easy slipcover for the benches. I have been feeling trapped by the pattern and colors. Plus since I have three small children, the covers will hopefully protect the benches a little longer. More on this project at a later date.....
Want to recreate a piece of furniture that is bugging you- find a piece with good bones that need a "face-lift"? Here are the steps I am using to refinish my Goodwill find:
1.) Sand table- Lightly if you are painting, well if you are staining. I sanded my well, then decided to paint- oh well! Nothing like sweat equity. I borrowed a sweet sander that made the job super fast, and I am going back in to do some areas I couldn't reach by hand with a sandpaper cube (this will hopefully help to save my hands).
2.) Wood Filler- I am using Minwax Stainable Wood Filler. This was recommended by someone else, so it will be my first go with it. Sand lightly with 220 (or above) sandpaper to smooth surface once filler dries.
3.) Primer- Most people recommend Kilz- but since I am painting my table red, I found a Krylon primer/paint combo in "Banner Red" that I will be using for my base coat. I will go back with regular Krylon Banner Red for follow up coats
4.) After paint dries, I am applying Minwax water based polycrylic in a satin finish. 3 coats to finish.
According to most blogs and sources I have read this will help give me a professional finish since I do not have a high quality paint sprayer.

Decorating Inspiration

I read this really great article this am about taking design risks and that doing so can create the most payoff for a visually appealing space. Monday night, I was thinking about what I would like to do with my formal dining room, and at first, I thought I might draw my inspiration from my china pattern. However, I have been drawn to Ann Marie's Robin's Egg Blue Armoire that she refinished. I loved how she breathed new life into the peice and I thought I could do something similar with my new china cabinet. I have always loved orange and turquoise as a color combination. I found a lovely blogger who has a serious turquoise passion and she posted some amazing interiors using the color combination. So that started my obsession with creating this orange and turquoise dining room. My concern is that I really don't want it to look "southwestern" and I am very concerned because I have this amazing antique mission door table and wrought iron chairs. I am hoping that if I use modern prints on my chair cushions, and curtain trims, I will be able to pull off a look that is not entirely 'southwestern' in nature. I placed a bid on some great brand new- but out of package light cream silk draped. Hopefully I can snag the deal because I have similar curtains in another room, and they are great! I am also hoping that I can find the right wall color. I am thinking a coral color?? Maybe adding a pattern with an all over wall stencil. I really love the large Hollywood Squares pattern and the damask. www.royaldesignstudio.com Whether I keep the walls nuetral in a white color or go with the color, I will be creating a tone on tone design with the stencils. New Projects!

As much I have loved creating girls hair accessories for the past five years- it has been nice to think about starting different projects. Mainly these involve sprucing up the nest a bit. We moved into our current house about three years ago this summer and since we used to be house "flippers" I never really did much to the house under threat of my hubby wanting to sell it. Since the massive slowdown and housing market swan dive- the foreclosure we purchased has gone even further down in value- and I doubt we are moving anytime soon. Not only that, but since my husband is self employed and they have changed lending practices, it would be a significant challenge to even get a loan. When life gives you lemons- just start decorating!! So it is time to finally make this house a home- pick the colors I want, and not worry about what most "buyers" would like.
So I have two current projects 1.) I am refinishing a Goodwill find- a dining room table. It is much larger than our current four seater which will help to seat our growing family and guests. I have sanded the top (which is actually a door) and next I will start on the pedestal base. I am thinking I will stain it black?? I have a great banquet seating that my mom gave to me from Ballard Designs- shown above with a variation of a small cream and black check upholstery rather than the brown and cream shown. I love it, but sometime I wish it had different upholstery. If I get super ambitious I may just reupholster the seating. So I plan to repaint the room a cream color- which will also make its way onto the walls in the living room. (open floor plan hell) I really need to add a valance over the window and a set of curtains to the sliding glass door. I currently have some heinous vertical blinds covering the slider which remind me of living in an apartment. I also would love to find about four or five chairs- all different which I could paint or stain the same color. I would like to add washable (a must in a house with small children) chair cushions- possibly in a coordinating fabric- matching with bench and window treatments. I desperately need to paint a magnetic steal board I have black to match the framed chalk board. Oh and a light fixture-- the one I have is soooooo bad. Anyhow- this is now my idea launching pad. I actually am planning on redecorating most of the first floor common spaces. This is just the first peice of furniture I am redoing- so I though I better post my progress here. That way you can keep me in check- this is small room and should not take another three years!! Let's see if I can do it.
My second furniture refinishing project is a 70s china cabinet that will go in my formal dining room. I am planning on painting this peice- not sure what color yet. I have another great door table (made from an old mission door) in my "formal" dining room. We had wrought iron chairs made for the table and finished black. I upholstered matching seat cushions, and curtains (which we sold when we sold our previous house) We have an area rug for under the dining table that coordinates with cushions- but I would really love to go in another direction. This room is another blank slate, builder basic beige, no window treatments- very spartan- even for me. The area rug and fabric are bigger ticket items so I really am unsure what I would like to do. My current thought is that I need to take a look at the antique formal china I have and will display for some inspiration. It was a gift from my mother in law and is passed down- completely gorgeous and I love it!

I am actually considering going back to work- at least as a substitute teacher a couple days a week. So for now, the bows simple must be put on the back burner. I have so much inventory to clear!! I am very much considering closing up shop. I think I told myself for years that I would do it to keep myself in supplies- but what I am noticing is that I am spending way more than I take in and that I have a lot of misc. supplies. So I think I am going to close up shop- spend more time with my family- and less time being a full time craft-a holic/shop-aholic. I have one of those personalities that obsesses and I am done obsessing. So after my shows this summer and early in the school year this upcoming fall- I will be closing up shop. I will only take custom orders at that point- just because I am sure as much as I want to clean out my inventory of stuff- I will have a hard time parting with my ribbons. I think it is time for me to move on.... So I am.

Okay- as an optimist, I try to "look on the bright side" of many situations. I recently have been given a fabulous assignment. A friend had a bad situation presented to her and decided to make something positive happen. And I in turn have benefited as well. I received copious amounts of well coordinated ribbons the other night after my husband's basketball game. I went through the ribbon that night, just winding it up and keeping it coordinated, not really knowing what it was for, but knowing that for someone to have gone through all that ribbon and coordinated it, it must be for some project. A day later my friend called and asked me to make some bows for her granddaughter from the ribbon. She had coordinated all these great ribbons, and now I got to put my spin on her sets. HOW FUN! Well like many other moms during winter, our family has been battling "this" stomach flu or "that" cold during these long months- but what better time to create some new bows!! So my friend and I have taken our own personal "lemons" and decided to make lemonade-- HOW DELISH! So far I have about 20 bows finished with many more in the works. Here is a quick sample. I have been playing!! And I LOVE it! That has been the best thing about my kids crummy colds and flu this winter. I have been stuck indoors with quite activities- like bowing! Recently I have been obsessed with headbands! These are just a few I did yesterday. I am also in heart with my double ruffle ribbon, if you can't tell. So since I keep creating, I know I need to do another show. So June 11-12 I am signed up to do the Territorial Days Craft show downtown Prescott on the Courthouse. Well I know I have been a random at best poster on the blog these days and anyone who used to follow, may just by chance read this or see that I FINALLY posted something new. Believe it or not, I have actually been doing a couple hair bow related things. First off for the new year, I received lots of new ribbons!! Beautiful, decadent and super fun. I also purchased a couple more tools to help organize my space. They are fabulous ribbon organizers that allow me to see what I have, and cut as I go- nice. Secondly, I have made some time to start creating- my favorite!- again. In my first creation, I started by fusing two ribbons to create a new unique ribbon. I used a new tool- technically a mini iron for small seams- to fuse a double ruffle ribbon to a gorgeous woven polka dot ribbon. The results are gorgeous! My next new creation are items for "big" girls. I found these super fun colored bobby pins and a great seller on Etsy (Buttons and Badges) who makes these fun covered buttons. With a little e6000, the two became one- and the results are some super mod hair pretties. I can't wait to bust them out with a sundress this spring. My third creation is bitty baby bling. I used solid grosgrain ribbon, created a barbell style bow- which I haven't done before- startched and baked them to keep their shape- then applied a coordinating sparkle to the center. They are super tiny perfect for the newbie in your life! Lastly, with all my new creations, I decided I had better stop spending on new supplies and start selling. I signed up for a two day show this spring. It is through the Briar Patch Marketplace. Here's the deets:

Sorry it has been such a long time posting, but we have had a fun filled and BUSY summer. Currently I am gearing up for our first trip to Disneyland. We are headed out to San Diego to take in the sites. On our hit list is Scripps Aquarium (much less expensive than Sea World), Mission Beach, LaJolla Beach, Coronado Beach and Legoland. In Anaheim we will take on Disneyland with a 3 mo. old (surely the easiest), a 2 year old and a 4 year old. I bought a guidebook (The Unofficial Guide to Disneyland- excellent read) and one suggestion they made for traveling with small children was to have a type of family uniform. (hopefully, making it easier to spot your own kind among the crowds). Taking this to heart- I actually got a little excited. Micheal's Craft Store had solid tees on sale in youth and adult sizes a couple weeks ago- 5 for $10. While we needed five- I only bought four since there was no infant sizing available- and he will be with me the entire time anyway. So since we are doing a "park hopper" pass and will have the opportunity to hit up Disneyland and California Adventure- we needed 2 sets of shirts. Mom and Dad's shirts are plain, but I had fun with the kids. Maggie went gaga over Minnie- so we created two different Minnie looks for her. Flip went with pirate Mickey and cowboy Mickey. I think that I may actually create a tutorial for these appliques when we get back- they were super simple. I purchased lighter color shirts so the kids can get autographs from their favorite characters and I will not have to carry autograph books. These shirts are also so that I get out of souvenir shopping while in the park! Of course I had to make coordinating bows for Maggie to wear on our trip and with her shirts. Check out the pictures and if their is enough interest- I could post a quick tutorial with applique patterns to recreate the look on your own.

What a gorgeous day we had! I took the kids to Out of Africa today- this is a local safari style zoo. I had a wonderful time and the weather was a sunny 75 degrees! Super fun. Inspired to shake off the zombie pale skin and put some flowers in my hair- I ordered the following flowers. In a couple of weeks I have an event scheduled. It is the annual indoor/outdoor Sale at Tim's Toyota Center in Prescott Valley. This is a great opportunity for locals to check out my goods. It is always easier to see and touch in person rather than online. April 10th from 7 am to 2 pm will be a huge community garage sale. Just finished my new studio space this morning and I am thrilled. I can now sit down to make my bows- which is awesome considering I am 25 weeks pregnant. My space is organized and I have been playing with lots of new ribbon. My favorite lately has been all the fun Minnie Mouse prints I purchased. We are going to Disney Land this summer for a family vacation and I am already planning my daughters outfits and accessories. I have also been busy posting new items to etsy when our computer has been working. We have actually had quite a bit of rainy/snowy weather causing connection problems in the area. Pretty soon I think I will actually get out my sewing machine and finish some of the sewing projects I started last year! (yikes) I will post a picture of my new "studio"/playroom when the camera batteries are recharged. For now, here are some fun things I have been doing.

Happy New Year to All! I have finally gotten all of my bow making and other crafting supplies to one space. Hubby has been super busy with work (which is a blessing) but I still do not have a dedicated craft area since we can't move the computer with out rewiring his office space. Soon it will be here- I just know it! If not, I will just ask for that for V-day. Anyhow, I have been bowing and I will have some pics posted, hopefully, by the end of the day.

Yesterday, during the opening of presents, we found out that we are expecting a new baby boy this May! The girls will be outnumbered, but certainly not forgotten. I am working on putting together the kids rooms and our family room, since these areas have been neglected since we moved in a year and a half ago. I finished moving all of my crafting items to my new space, but I am awaiting the removal of dear hubby's stuff. We are still needing to run the cable for the computer to his office space in guest room, so I will just have to be patient. I actually would really like to start making some bows for the New Year- but I don't have a table top to do it, without dragging everything back downstairs again. Patience, Amy, patience!

Just recently added new smaller alligator clips to my hardware arsenal. They are the perfect size for baby items. So very dainty! Before I new I was having a boy, I figured I would have a great picture of a baby girl at the hospital for the paper. I was planning on using one of the new infant hats I had with a small flower on it. So much cuter than the freebies they give you at the hospital. Oh well- I will just have to find a friend with a new baby girl to give one to!

I have been busy- like most of you are- with the hustle of the holidays. My hubby and I recently took a little weekend away to PHX. We have been need a more permanent office set up since we have used a card table for over a year. Anyhow, IKEA seemed a reasonable solution to what we were looking for. While there my husband got a small computer desk- YIPPIE! And I received- cue the angels singing- a craft set up! Slowing but surely, when time allows, I have been organizing my space. It is still not really fully mine since it is housing the computer temporarily- and my hubby seems to be sort of taking over some of my storage. But on Christmas Day we are supposed to find out the sex of our soon to be addition and this will help us to determine what furniture can stay or go- which will allow the guest room- to become hubby's office and I can reclaim my craft space. The best part is that all of my stuff will finally be in one designated area- versus, upstairs, downstairs, and in two different closets. I cannot wait to use it for the first time. I am guessing after the new year! Anyhow- new designs will be posted soon as I just found and amazing "best friends" print that I love- and a ton of new marabou colors. New Double Ruffle Colors and Mini's

Recently I ordered some more colors in the gorgeous and hard to find double ruffle ribbon. When I was searching for the normal sizes I carry in a 7/8" width and a 1.5" width, I ran across several colors in a smaller 5/8" width. While shopping on the same site- I found really tiny alligator clips. I figured I could do a line of tiny baby bows in the 5/8" width double ruffle in some nice basic colors and use the tiny hardware with it. Well needless to say- if I find out our baby is a girl- she will be getting her own set of the tiny double ruffle bows. They are about 1.5" across and a little larger than a quarter. I had to use 1/4" ribbon to line the hardware since it is so small. I also ran across some other great colors in the larger sizes. Needless to say- it was a successful online shopping trip. If the smaller baby double ruffle colors I have initially do well, I will add additional colors to the line.

The bows have coordinating spikes and a unique handmade and designed ribbon that cannot be found in stores. The bow itself is a boutique style bow in a ribbon that I print myself. The bow center is also hand designed and made.

The additional clippie features a little character clippie complete with an embellishement such as a mini bow or rhinestone.

The bows can be worn independently- For instance the bow can be worn in a pony tail. The clip could be used to keep those annoying wispy bangs out of her face. Or you could use them together in this manner. Those without a center embellishment can have the clippie slide through the center of the bow. 3 looks in 1!

Tucson Getaway

This weekend I am headed out with my husband, brother in law and some friends to visit Tucson. The really relaxing portion is that this will be an adult only trip! I am actually looking forward to leaving the ribbon behind for a couple of days. It has been a very busy with with web orders and custom orders and then the inevitable preschool trips, housework etc. I always feel re-inspired after taking a little break. When I come back it will be Turkey Day Madness and then in the beginning of December I will be posting more new designs and some old favorites.

I had a blast at Fountain Hills Festival of the Arts. It was a success and I sold a ton of Christmas items. I think in the future however I will really have to move my booth further toward Ave of the Fountains as I think the traffic was much slower in my location. I heard from numerous customers that my bows were the best at the show- which not to sound too competitive, made my show! I will also have to seriously consider the costs associated with just having a booth. I think $450- may just be too much. That means for me just to participate I have to sell and create 60 over the top bows just to be there. That is a lot of time spent making hairbows just to go. Many customers asked if I was going to be at Tempe, I researched the show and decided it was a no go. It is about $600 just to go, so again that is 100 bows I have to make and sell , in my over the top style, just to attend. Larger shows like this are really discouraging for smaller crafters. If you are an artists, it would one take a sale of maybe one or two peices to break even. So I think I will stick to smaller scale shows for the time being. Thanks to all who came out, even multiple days of the show, to see me. I had a great time.

Bowin Like CRZY!

Well as reality has set in, I have realized that taking a large chunk of time off to sleep and gestate might not have been the best idea with a big show coming up. My hubby gave me a reality check yesterday. I had just come home from a very successful 2 hour show at the MOPS Business Expo, and was happy about all the new awesome customers I had met and just the ease and general professionalism of the show. He reminded me that next week, if I had just 1% of the customer's of the expected 200,000 ppl, that would be 2,000 customers, and did I have enough inventory?? Well I have never run out yet, but then again I have never attended such a large show. Since the show is out of town, I will not have supplies to make any new products while I am there?? So whether I am ready or not, here I come! I am trying to finish about 100 more over the top style bows along with two custom orders before I leave! Yikes.
Good news on the pettiskirt front. I received a portion of my order today. Since it was not my complete order, nor was is fully correct, I called again to Miss Things Boutique. And guess what! I finally got a call back!!! I just about jumped out of my chair! Anyhow, it was the first time I had talked to the owner Angela and she was really sweet and promised to make the order that was incorrect again, and send the correct pettiskirt that was missing. It should be here by next Weds or Thurs, just in time for Fountain Hills. Let's keep our fingers crossed that this will all be resolved, I can contact the BBB and resolve the matter and be thankful that Angela did the right thing and can have her business back in my better graces.

Creative Burst

I have been having some fun lately coming up with some new styles and playing with digital tools to improve my product photos. Today I learned how to apply sparkles. This helps to enhance the bling I add to my bows. I try to make the sparkle subtle since I don't want it to scream photoshop. Each of the rhinestones on the above bow has a little sparkle added to it. I also have a couple new items I've had fun with. Check out Dorothy on the Oz bow. I used a ink jet printer and shrink a dink style film to create the center for the bow. The ribbon is also printed off my printer. It takes a lot of extra time, but I can get ribbons that are not sold in stores- so that is kinda fun. Anyhow, I am hoping to post some new items to etsy today.

Swine Flu and More

As to why I am staying up late- while I have the swine flu and I am pregnant- worrying about these stupid pettiskirts is beyond me! I decided last weekend to take action. I filed complaints with IC3 and BBB of Atlanta trying to get this issue resolved. After spending last nite in the ER with a fever that seemed unbreakable, I figured, if I was up to it I would actually try to get on the computer today. I also called the company again and heard some long winded message about the phones/and e-mail services being wonky. Well I doubt they have been like this since July 27th! Anyhow- we will see if they chose to resolve the matter. BBB gave them until Nov 18th- which is of course after the show that I was going to display them at- hopefully this will prompt them to move faster.

Pettiskirt Woes!

I posted a while ago about having placed an order with Miss Thing's Boutique and ordering some custom pettiskirts that I planned on reselling and keeping for my daughter. Well I have to say that I can NOT recommend this company to anyone. I placed my order as part of a group buy (meaning the more ppl who buy the more we save) and everyone has received an order except for me. Everyone who ordered has had issues! Wrong colors, sizes, missing products. We ordered July 27 2009 with the understanding that it would take 5-7 weeks to have these items delivered. It is now October 17th, and to this date I have received nothing. I spent about $150 and my credit card was charged immediately for the purchases. This morning before our soccer game, I posted a complaint to the IC3 and BBB of Atlanta GA. I have tried calling, e-mailing (repeatedly) and I let them know I was going to take action. Still no response. So at this point I feel like I have been stolen from. Please understand I know life happens with small business, but I am not a mind reader, nor have I ever met these people. All I know is that I paid for a product I did not recieve and others whom I ordered with are having serious issues as well. I would avoid this company until there customer service issues are ironed out.

Fountain Hills Festival of the Arts

Well I am officially gearing up for Fountain Hills Festival of the Arts. Luckily my mom will be helping me run my booth at the festival since it is supposed to draw so many visitors. I am debuting lots of new stuff, I hope to get some items added to my etsy site soon. I have lots of Christmas postings I need to create and many fun new character items.
I recently took the plunge and purchased lots of digital products from the Fairy Pixel. (She had two great sales one for Labor Day and another for her birthday) I have been printing my own ribbon and creating my own bow centers- based on her designs. I recently was able to create a custom bow for a little girl who was dressing up as "Alice" for Halloween. It turned out super cute!!
Well I better stop blogging so I can really start bowing.

Party Panache

Well I haven't been making bows, but I have been gearing up for Maggie's second birthday. I made cute centerpeices which I am going to put on the kids tables. I also made some really fun fairy wands. It was really windy when I took this picture, but I think they turned out great- way cuter than anything I found at the dollar store, and I already had most of the supplies. I just bought more dowel rods so I didn't have to use the rods I cook my korkers on. They were super simple. Read on if you want to create your own!
Step 1: Heat glue gun. Find a 3/8" width ribbon you like. Place a dot of hot glue at the bottom of the dowel. Wrap your ribbon winding up. Don't worry that the bottom is totally covered, we will finish it off at the last step. Wrap your ribbon up the dowel and leave your self 3-4" extra ribbon at the top. Place a clothes pin around the top of the ribbon.
Step 2: Find all the fun coordinating accessories. I used curling ribbon, eyelash yarn in two different varieties, strips of tulle and marabou toppers. Gather all the peices into a line- save your marabou. Unwind a 2-3" section of ribbon from the top of wand and place your ribbons/yarns on top of the dowel. Wrap your ribbon around the ribbons/yarn several times until about 1" from the top. Take your section of marabou and create an oval with the two ends facing the ribbon/dowel opening. Insert the marabou and wrap the remaining ribbon around the marabou several times. Use glue gun to secure ribbon to top of dowel.
Step 3: Finishing off the bottom. Use the same ribbon you wrapped the dowel with in a 1-2" section. Heat seal on end. Place glue gun dot where the ribbon started on the dowel. Wrap the ribbon around the bottom of the the dowel so that there is no wood visible. Place another glue dot and snip the end of the ribbon. Heat seal the ribbon end again.
Wah-lah! Ta DA! Now use your new fairy wand to magically clean that house!!

An Enchanted Birthday!

I can't believe it, in two weeks my little girl turns two! This year is her year for a party. (I rotate the kids years for parties with friends- other than that we just do a small family party) I decided it would be really fun to do a fairy themed party. I just used photoshop to make the invites and I have found awesome fairy halos, wands, wings and tutus. I just need to narrow it down for costs sake! I am really working on ideas to turn my backyard into an enchanted garden. I am hoping I can rent a bubble machine and barrow a couple tables from my neighbors/friends for the kids. I have a great concept- now I just need to be able to turn it into a reality!

World Arts Festival in PV this weekend

Head out to Prescott Valley's Civic center this weekend (7501 E. Civic Center Circle) The theme this year is Plunge into the Arts. There is all sorts of entertainment including Micheael Reed's Blues Band, Phoenix Mercury Hip Hop Squad and plenty more throughout the day. Everyone is encouraged to make history by participating in the largest painting with most participating artists. The event is completely FREE!! They are having entertainment, arts and crafts vendors (SUGAR AND SPICE WILL BE THERE!) cultural food vendors, local musicians, a make and take tent, inflatable jumpy village, juried art exhibit, wine tasting, beer garden, mascot kickball, kite decorating, and a giant chess contest! Phew- make it an action packed family day. After our Pee Wee soccer game in the morning, I will be manning my booth all day. (from 10 a.m.- 7 p.m.) It is just a one day event this year, so come enjoy some wallet friendly fun things to do with your family and stop by my booth (space 10) and say "hi"!

I have covered 70% of the vet bill at this point and I am feeling like I am contributing to our family- which is really great since I haven't had a "full time job" since 2005! These last two days I am marking down my gift sets and two tone and polka dot mini basics. This will be it for the markdowns this fall. I am in the process of restocking and I am expecting shipments on all new hairbow centers, ribbons, hardware, hats, PETTISKIRTS (raspberry, aqua/brown, yellow, pink, pale yellow vintage with pink underlay, pink sparkle tutus--and more!), and great new bow patterns I am currently learning! A couple months ago I participated in a group buy through a blog I belong to. The group buy was arranged so that if we bought in bulk we would receive a discount. I thought that these amazing pettiskirts would be a fun item to carry- especially for craft shows. This picture is similar to one of the pettiskirts I ordered. Mom's run this company called Miss Thing Boutique. They have amazing handmade pettiskirts. So of course I had to order a couple. The pettiskirt pictured is made from vintage lace--OH SO ROMANTIC! I am supposed to receive the pettiskirts this September and I can't wait to see them.
Another item I ran into while doing some research seems simply amazing. The Fairy Pixel is run by a former bow maker who now produces digital products! Simply amazing. As a bow maker she always wanted ribbons to match certain items or themes. Necessity being the mother of invention- she created digital images that can be transfered to ribbon! Needless to say I LOVE the idea. I am not sure this option is cost efficient. The reason that I say this is because you have to buy the images- then purchase blank ribbon and transfer paper- and ink cartridges for your computer. I think it is probably more costly than purchasing pre-printed ribbon. The catch is the item is almost exclusive- you will not see it for sale online, or in any stores. It is a copyright image and therefore for personal use and resale in a completed item. (so I can use it for my bows!) Not sure if I absolutely have to do this yet-- but I really like the concept. She also has a whole host of other digital products. One that I will be purchasing in late fall will be her Christmas greeting cards. You add you picture and words to her template, print and mail! Very unique and you can print as many as you need to send. You can even reuse it year after year, changing your words and pictures. SO smart. I think my next class at Yavapai College will have to be one on digital images- my photoshop class was okay, but obviously just the tip of the iceberg.

Surgery to Remove Tumor Prompts Huge SALE!

For this week I am posting two different types of accessories at HUGE reductions for 48 hours each! Tomarrow and Wednesday will be sales on my Over the Top Bows and Mini Over the Top Bows as well as all crochet hats with removeable flowers. Our family dog Indiana was seen by our vet after we noticed a large lump on her shoulder seemed to have grown drastically over night. The vet initially thought the lump was cancerous- but it turns out it was just very large (size of a grapefruit) and will take extra time to heal since her shoulder muscle had to be cut to remove the tumor. Anyhow- this is quite a big expense that was unexpected and I have many craft show fees also approaching their deadlines! So enjoy my sale and enjoy knowing that you are truly helping our family!

I recently had an online request to make a bow similar to one that I have posted on Etsy. The client wanted a bow for her daughter's second birthday with a hot pink and turquoise lollipop center. I normally purchase my centers and searched all evening- the usually places for a hot pink and turquoise center and I was unable to find one. However after some thought, I realized that I could easily make one. I created this lollipop clippie as a fun favor but with a little modification I could easily make this a center for a bow! Just proves to me that sometimes it is way more fun to make something- than buy it!

I can't wait to order some more supplies for the fall. I have found a great source for crochet hats and I am hoping to carry some different colors in them this fall. I also found some amazing flowers with handbeaded detailing that I love! Now if I could just clear our some inventory from last year to make room for more. With the return of the school year many kids have parties to attend. With that in mind I tried to showcase some of my items in fully coordinated gift sets. Each gift set is age appropriate- for instance I have baby sets which would be perfect for a baby shower. They contain fabric covered wipe cases, interchangeable nylon bow band sets- with two coordinated accessories and a pair of ribbon ruffle socks. Girls sets include an over the top bow in a theme that matches with a handmade polymer clay and swavorski beaded necklace and either a pair of ribbon ruffle socks or a super cute set of handmade ribbon shoelaces with unbreakable plastic tips.

I was having a hard time making my standard OTT Bow, which I know I should get cracking on considering an upcoming show and possible wholesale order, but I just couldn't get it together today. I wasn't having much fun and because bows don't pay the bills, I decided to try something new. I pulled out a old bag of tricks. I have been inspired and annoyed by crazy loopy bows I have seen other bow makers create. Sometimes I love them, and other times I think they are waaaay too much-- which is hard for me to confess, since I always think more is just more! Anyway, I pulled out a bag of ribbon scraps and some hardware and elastic thread and thought I would give it a whirl. Here aretwo creations that I came up with. I must, however, thank my hubby for taking the kids to the pool because anytime I try anything new, it takes extra concentration!

First Craft Show a Success!

After almost breaking into tears during the first two hours of my first craft show, I was greeted by a friend Hilary who brought the traffic with her and the rest of the day was a joy! I was nervous with the infrequent activity of the first hour and a half of the show, but after 10:30 it really picked up. At the end of the first day I had at least made what I had invested into the show, between the actual grassy space, buying the tent (garage sale from a friend), Home Depot supplies like pegboard and hooks, and the marketing materials from vista print. Phew, that meant day two was for "profits" (which I don't think we are quite there yet considering what I spent last year (oops)) And even though everyone said Sunday's are slower, I actually did better the second day! WAHOO. I met a wonderful craft show "mentor" Cindy Daniels of Baubles and Beads www.baublesandbeads.biz who gave me super yummy foods from her bakery and tons of great advice. I think I will do one more downtown show in the fall and possibly a show out here in PV this summer. My big show to gear up for is the Fountain Hills show. Cindy recommended that I show there the cost is $450 for the weekend but it draws in 200,000 people. She also recommenced that I have at least two other people in the booth helping me. She said to start bowing now- (yikes the show is Nov.)

Territorial Day Craft Fair

Since it has been a busy couple of weeks gearing up for the craft show, I have been slow to do any postings on my blog. I think that I am as prepared as I can be for the show this weekend and I am going to get a couple more sheets of peg board and hangers for my items. I am sort of nervous for the set up since we can't start setting up until 6 pm on Friday. It will be a couple of short hours before it gets dark and I don't have electricity for my booth. Territorial Days Arts and Craft Fair

Next weekend I have my first downtown craft show! I have been really busy gearing up and the AZ weather has actually been cooperating. It almost feels like monsoon season. It seems to rain every afternoon. I have been doing some thinking about how I package and market my items in the hopes that I can move some inventory I have been wanting to. Last week Friday, a friend invited me to her home to show my bows and have lunch. I repackaged some items that I have been wanted to clear out for a while and it worked. They finally sold! I am glad to have more space in my boxes. This set me on a marketing/packaging mission and I have come up with some great ways to showcase my goods. Today I will be finishing off gift sets. Each set will contain a great "over the top" style hair bow that will match a necklace and either a pair of socks or a set of shoe laces. All three items will be packaged in a clear celophane shrink wrap bag topped off with some curled ribbon. I am going to place them in a large storage basket on a table for the show. I think this will work well and I can clear out some bows that I only have one left of. Anyhow- this has been my recent "revelation" in the bow making world. I also think I am going to put some solid bows into sets such as a set of brights, pinks, nuetrals etc. I think often the most practical bows like solids get overlooked and they are a great "bang for the buck" type item. We will see if I sell more this way....

Vista Print How I love Thee! Let me count the ways....

If you own a small business or just want to create some fun and FREE mom cards check out www.vistaprint.com. This company has weekly special where they give things away!! I know it sounds crazy, but I use them for EVERYTHING and they are great. I have been figuring out how to really take advantage of their products. For years I have admired how some women have the coolest bow cards for their bows. I wondered how they could afford such nice marketing materials. I would look online and find these great predesigned items- and Whoa Nelly! I knew I could not splurge on those. However necessity can be the mother of invention. I have known about vista print for a while. I have used them for business cards or postcards- that I used in the traditional way with their templates. I would promote things I was doing with my business on the postcards. I was recently needing some more bow cards (which previously I designed and printed and cut and punch all on my own- labor intensive- but cheaper) I really did not like how flimsy my cards were. I was browsing through the free products on Vista and I took another look at the standard size postcards and I realized they would be a great size for my "Over the Top Bows." When I read a little further I realized I could download a template to my Photoshop program. I actually took an online Photoshop class a couple of years ago through out local J.C. with the intention of making my bow pictures look better. Thank goodness I did that because our teacher really focused on all the cool design options you could create in PHTShp. Anyhow long story longer, I use the template to create bow cards. This is a different example of clippie cards that I created but it is the same concept. The best part is when I joined ETSY, I paid a desiger for my logo work (I think it was $20) She used my bow drawing and worked her magic on the rest. Since I paid for all the designs she sent me I can use them on all my marketing materials and it makes my business much more cohesive. Today I was reading through a bow makers blog I belong to and I found another little vista trick. The girls said you can save even more money on shipping by creating two orders. Vista print charges you expontentially more for shipping the more free products you take advantage of. You can however place multiple orders and save a TON on shipping. Banner for Craft Show

So I am finishing up my application for the Territorial Days craft show this June and I realized that I don't have any appropriate signage. Vista Print has banners half off right now and they are outdoor vinyl. I created this banner using their template and Photoshop. It is using the same font and colors that I use with my marketing materials. What do you think. Is it easy enough to read? Keep in mind the sign is 3' x 2'

First Downtown Craft Show!

I decided to take the plunge and enter my first craft show downtown this summer. I found a two day show with reasonable rates? $240! This was the least expensive downtown show I could find. I am pretty confident I can at least break even on this show. Hopefully I will gain some more exposure to locals and ppl within the state. The show is juried, so I have to actually apply and be accepted. So today I fill out my paper work and my big ole check. I would much rather be spending this money on supplies- I just found some great flowers at Artistic Ribbon online- but I really should sell some inventory as it has officially take over my dining room. Maybe one day I will have a craft room. They show cased an awesome room in Bh&G this month! Check it out. This is not the room I saw in the mag, but I love the storage options here and the long counter.

This weekend we are heading off with our dear friend the Calrow's to Mexico on vacation and I for one cannot wait! During my week before vacay- I did a few orders- one for flip flops, one a gift of flip flops and another gift for a Hula Girl themed birthday party. I had a blast but I am glad to hang up the glue gun for a week and pick up a Margarita instead! Wahoo.

Summer Flip Floppin Fun!

Last week I had a first birthday party to attend for a friend's daughter. Of course she asked for bows- and I was happy to oblige, but I wanted to add a little something different to her gift. I was in Old Navy the other week and noticed these great flip flops for toddlers and babies with the straps on the back. So I picked up two pairs( you can get 2 pairs for $5) thinking that I would embellish them for Maggie- when it dawned on me that I should make a pair for Hadley as well. This pair pictured is for my daughter- it matches the suits that Gigi bought her for Easter- but Hadley's pair were great too. I used korkers in the center of Hadley's and they were over the top! So much fun. Turns out Melanie (Hadley's mom) liked them so much she ordered a pair for a friends b-day party she is attending in Vegas. We are headed on a family vacay next week so I am making a pair for my friend's daughter- we are traveling with them- and I can't wait to get started. Old Navy had the perfect green and dark pink cherry flip flops and Dahlia's swimsuit has an adorable cherry print, I have only done a stripped bling pattern, but I think I want to try to make hers a cherry print. I am not sure how I am going to do this yet- but it is an new creative challenge. Off to finish playing with ribbon and sparkles- man I have such a tough life!! (just kidding)

After a little diliberation, I am taking a little "Spring Break" from bow making. I will work more on my blog and my Etsy site, and of course my custom orders, but I will slow down on my "stock items" and enjoy my family and the nice weather. This is a collage of three lil' bunnies who are customers- okay my daughter is kinda cheating but it went with the theme of the collage. Kaylee is wearing an adorable custom made baby korker and interchangeable headband in pink and white. Maggie has on a cute pink crochet hat with hand beaded sequin and beaded flower. Lastly Maddie has on a pink knit headband and a korker with blue, pink, and green. These girls look adorable and show us how fun spring can be. Happy Easter to everyone. I am off to dye some eggs with two small children! I think they will only be wearing underwear/diapers and aprons considering I really don't want to do extra laundry if I don't have too! HA

This morning while I was preparing some great flowers I ordered, I received a phone call. It was a new customer that I worked with last week on a really fun order. Well I have not met this woman before but she went out of her way (and paid long distance fees) to call and thank me for her order. Talk about sweet. I was really very flattered and it made all the work I have to do this week worth it. Hopefully she will send a couple cute pictures my way so I can put them in my collage. I have been working a great customer collage but I only have three clients besides my daughter who have sent me pictures. I think I am gonna start to carry my camera with me so that when I see them wearing one of my creations I can quick snap a picture!

The creation to the left was spurred by the fun order from the above mentioned customer I worked with last week. This is something that I was inspired to do and I think that it is just cute. It is super small- which is hard to tell from the picture. Perfect for that special baby girl!

Baby Mullet Pays off Big Time!

Since Maggie started getting more hair, I noticed it was growing in much like a mullet (it must be her dad's side). Well that long in the back- short up front look is starting to pay off! We can finally get her hair into two tiny pig tails. Sure, I may have to wet her whole head down to make it work- but then it just curls up so cute! I absolutely love it, now I can get two matching bows in her hair!! I just love this look so much. Today I accented the piggies with korkers in lime and it looks adorable- I know I am biased- but this picture may help you agree-- HOW CUTE.
